The younger Knights and Lady Knights were all in action Monday, January 9, with the middle school teams facing Mansfield Senior while the boys’ freshman team took on Loudonville.
The night could be deemed a success, as four of the five teams emerged victorious, the other getting nipped at the end by just two points.
The West Holmes Knights boys’ freshman basketball team gained a victory against the Loudonville Redbirds. The Knights outscored the Redbirds in the first half 17-15 and again in the second half 24-16. West Holmes won the ball game by a final score of 41-31. For the Knights, Mekhi Johnson led all scorers with 12 points. Grant Baker scored 11 points, Jacob Hammond and Sean Edmonds each scored seven points, Zander Proper added three and Clay Martin scored one. The Redbirds were led in scoring by Brightbill with 11 points.
In WHMS action, the seventh grade Lady Knights defeated Mansfield Senior 39-18. Tegan Harris scored 11 points, Chloe Shumaker added six points and six rebounds, and Avery Yoder scored six points as well.
The eighth grade Lady Knights remained red-hot, smoking Mansfield Senior 51-13. Paige Race led the way with 14 points, Katie Sprang scored 11 points and hauled down seven rebounds and Katrina Rolince chipped in with nine points.
The West Holmes boys eighth grade team has played well, but it lost another close one Monday 43-41 in a heartbreaker. Leading the way in the scoring column for the Knights was Zack Stair who popped in 10 points. Payton McKinney and Payton Miller each added six, Bubba Hay scored five, while Curtis Wagner, Stryder Hodges, Clayton Zimmerly and Luke Vess all pitched in with two points apiece.
The seventh grade Knights played very well in winning 51-37.
Two days earlier, The seventh grade Lady Knights used a well-balanced offensive attack to defeat River View 38-12. Kinsey Patterson and Claire Reynolds each scored nine points for the Lady Knights, and Tegan Harris added four assists and five points.
The eighth grade Lady Knights handed River View its first loss of the season, outscoring them 47-41. Hannah Rohr paced the Knights in scoring with 14 points, while Paige Race and Katrina Rolince each added 11. Alicia Alexander took care of business on the boards as she ripped down 10 boards for the Lady Knights.
The seventh grade Knights boys’ team played extremely hard and got things rolling early with their defense, sprinting out to a big lead early and never looking back in posting the 48-26 victory over the Black Bears.
The Knights’ eighth grade boys lost yet another tight one in a defensive battle by a score of 19-16. West Holmes was led in scoring by Josh Schrock’s six points, while Zack Stair and Bubby Hay added three apiece and Payton McKinney and Stryder Hodges both scored a pair.
The West Holmes Knights freshman boys’ basketball team battled the Wooster Generals in the Dungeon January 7, and used a strong second half to pull away to a 50-41 win.
Wooster lead by a slim one-point advantage going into the half. In the second half, the Knights outscored the Generals 32-22 to help the Knights win the ball game. For the Knights, Zander Proper led scorers with 16 points. Mekhi Johnson chipped in 15 points, while Jacob Hammond scored eight, Grant Baker scored five, Clay Martin added four and Colin Soukup pitched in with a bucket. The Generals were led in scoring by Kotvlock with 14 points.
