West Holmes wrestlers attack districts

The Div. II district wrestling tournament was once again held at Claymont High School on Friday, Feb. 26 in Uhrichsville. The tournament will continue on Saturday, Feb. 27 with some West Holmes wrestlers still in the winner’s bracket a and few that have their work cut out for them after losing and moving to the loser’s bracket.

Follow us on Twitter, @hcticket, for updated throughout the day on Saturday. As far as Friday goes, this is how each Knights’ wrestler got their district tournament started.

Sophomore Thane Kaufman (106 lbs.) got things started on the right foot for the Knights with a pin of Vinton County’s Mason Hamric in the second period. (video) Kaufman then won by major decision over Minerva’s David Church by the score of 14-0. The #5 seed in the bracket, Kaufman will now take on the #1 seed Ben Pasiuk on Saturday Feb. 27 to start his day.

Like Kaufman, West Holmes’ 126-pounder Josiah Allison won both his matches on Friday. (video) First off he got by Watterson’s Ben Kring with a pin in the third period and then in his second match of the day squeaked by Carrollton’s Justin Shaw by the score of 6-5. Also like Kaufman, Allison is the #5 seed in his bracket, but he’ll face #4 seed Tyliq Stewart of Whitehall-Yearling first on Saturday.

Cody Woods (132 lbs.) might have had the match of the day when he faced Whitehall-Yearling’s Tamagne Shiferaw. After one period he trailed 5-0, but forced overtime by tying the score at seven. In the OT period Cody Woods scored five more points on his way to a 12-7 win. He couldn’t relive the magic from the first match and dropped a 12-6 decision to Morgan’s Isaac Hager. Cody Woods will now move to the bottom bracket and will have to battle back.

Cole Woods (138 lbs.) did a lot of waiting around in his first match, which was stopped several times for blood breaks. It didn’t rattle the three-time state qualifier one bit though as he rolled to a technical fall win of 18-1 over Fairfield Union’s Ethan Miller. (video) The senior simply destroyed the sophomore. However, in Cole Woods’ second match he would fall to Claymont’s Maxx Peters by a score of 7-4. That means Cole Woods will have some work to do on Saturday to make it back to Columbus.

Michael Kashuba had no trouble in his first round match-up against Lakewood’s Alex Poling. The West Holmes senior and 160-pounder won by major decision of 16-5. (video) His next match wouldn’t go as well. Kashuba went to the mat against Claymont’s sophomore Ashton Eyler in his second match on Friday and was pinned in the third period.

In the 195-pound class, West Holmes’ Alex Walker dropped his first match-up with Marlington’s Zach Baker. Both juniors, Baker pinned Walker in the second period to move on. Saturday Walker will take on New Lexington’s Dylan Wright to try and start his day off with a win.
