West Holmes Boys Basketball vs. Garaway Recap

Dave Mast Recap

Garaway bolted to a quick lead against the Brady Arnold-less Knights on Saturday, Jan. 5 at The Dungeon, but a torrid streak of three consecutive trips down the floor by Michael DeWitt in the fourth quarter erased a three point Garaway lead, and eventually led  to a nine point swing. The sharp-shooting DeWitt nailed three straight triples from downtown to give the Knights momentum, then big Brock Macaulay finished the job with a resounding dunk moments later, sending the pro-Knights crowd into a frenzy. West Holmes held on despite Garaway’s spirited attempt to rally and beat the Pirates 46-42.

Garaway led at the end of the first quarter 10-5. Not much scoring. However, the second quarter things would would pick up.  Mostly Ryan Neer was responsible for that as he poured in a eight point quarter helping the Knights stay within five points at the half 24-19.

Michael DeWitt hit all those big threes in the fourth quarter, but Grant Hay, filling in for the ailing Brady Arnold at the point guard, hit a huge 3-point shot with 2:22 left in the third quarter that cut the Garaway lead to just 3 point 32-29. Gabe Snyder and Garaway’s Duane Troyer traded a pair of free throws to end the quarter and the Knights, though creeping back into the game still trailed 34-31 at the end of three.

The fourth quarter, heroic time for Michael DeWitt, saw the Knights outscore Garaway 15-8.  DeWitt was responsible for nine of those 15 points and ultimately was responsible for sending Garaway home with a loss.

The Knights are now 7-3 on the season.  Garaway shares the same 7-3 record at the halfway point of their season.

Locker Room Chatter

West Holmes Coach Jim Lindeman on his teams chance to play Garaway this season. – “They are a good ball team and they are good for a non-conference game because it helps us get through the course of the season.”

Lindeman on handling Garaway’s intense guard pressure said, “Tonight Garaway tried to pick us up a little bit more with some half court trapping and overall we handled it pretty well. That will be huge for us going forward especially without Brady on the floor. If he’s (Arnold) is in foul trouble or something, we showed we can win without him.”

Coach Lindeman on Michael DeWiitt’s great fourth quarter. “He needs to keep shooting, because if he doesn’t he’s not going to be on the floor. Yesterday (against Mansfield Sr.) he got us back in the game when he cut the lead to three (43-40) in the third quarter by shooting.  He really adds a dynamic to this team when he does that. Hopefully going forward he’ll continue to do so.”

Michael DeWiit post-game interview

Garaway Coach Dave Shutt on controlling the game till the end and then letting it get away. “We just have to get better and find a way to win in those situations. I’m not faulting the kids effort, they played hard.”

On the absent of superstar guard Brady Arnold Coach Shutt had to say, “Their a good team with or without Arnold. We still tried to use our quickness.” Did that alter the way that Shutt and the Pirates changed taking on the Knights? “Not to much,” said Shutt. “I still think we need to use our quickness and force some turnovers. We knew we had to pack it in tight and not let them score inside.”
