After the U10 West Holmes Youth Baseball season came to an exciting close, an All-Star team was chosen from the league’s five teams. The team ventured to the Chippewa Baseball Invitational Tournament in Doylestown on July 10 and 11 and brought home some trophies.
Chadwick Yoder and Mason Wolfe both drove home two runs a piece in a Knights 8-4 win over Massillon in the title game.
The win capped off a perfect 4-0 weekend for West Holmes with wins over Hudson and Chippewa in the round robin portion of the tournament and a semi-final win over Wadsworth.
In a back-and-forth title affair, Massillon put up two runs in the first inning on West Holmes’ starting pitcher Nick Ginsburg.
West Holmes would battle back immediately.
In the bottom of the first the Knights got a run when Yoder scored from third on a wild pitch.
Then in the bottom of the second Wolfe drove in the first of his two runs on a fielder’s choice that scored Brayden Miller. Graham Martin then bounced out to second, a play that scored Beau Norman from first base.
West Holmes quickly erased the deficit for the time being.
Massillon jumped back on the scoring wagon with a pair of runs in the fourth. Yet another lead change, but the Knights, like earlier, were prime to answer.
In the fifth, West Holmes plated four runs to take back a commanding 7-4 lead. Wolfe singled to lead off the inning and scored on a Ginsburg single. Mason Taylor, who drew a walk earlier in the frame, then scored on Lyle Wagler’s single. Yoder then belted a double that scored Ginsburg and Wagler. The hit parade in the fifth all came with two outs.
The Knights added an insurance run in the sixth when Wolfe’s second fielder’s choice plated Miller.
Ginsburg pitched the first two innings striking out five, including whiffing the side in the second. Wagler pitched the third, fourth and fifth innings allowing two runs and fanning three and picking up the win.
Yoder came on in the sixth to shut the door on Massillon, just allowing one base runner on a hit-by-pitch.
West Holmes beat Chippewa 5-1 and Hudson 8-7 in pool play and run-ruled Wadsworth 10-0 in five innings in the semi-final.
The team is sponsored by Roger Patterson and Hipp Farms.
Next up, the West Holmes U10 All-Stars will travel to Lancaster the weekend of the July 18 to try and keep the championship train rolling.
