Tiffin presents a huge challenge for area cross country runners

Jonathan Kandel continues to trend upward

The girls’ and boys’ cross country teams from Garaway and West Holmes participated in one of Ohio’s most enormous cross country formats recently when the two teams traveled west to take on the best of the best at the annual Tiffin Cross Country Carnival on Saturday, September 9.

The Lady Knights raced in the Division II-A competition and finished in a solid 19th-place overall. Freshman Katie Sprang led the way placing 44th overall, running a time of 20:47. Sophomore Morgan Allen (21:58/83rd) and junior Erin Norman (22:54/116th) were next up for the Lady Knights, followed by seniors Kaylor Perone (23:41/141st) and Megan Morrison (23;54/150th) rounding out the scoring for the Lady Knights. Freshman Brogan Steimel (24:07/154th) and sophomore Eleah Crayton (25:50/170th) also competed on the varsity squad.

The Knights boys placed 36th out of 47 teams. They were led by junior Jonathan Kandel who finished 127th in a time of 18:12. Seniors Jackson Iamarino (18:55/176th), Brayden Bender (19:04/188th), junior Travett Boughman (19:00/181st) and sophomore Jarek Snow (20:26/256th) all scored for the varsity team. Freshmen Caden Zigler (20:28/266th) and Caiden Carter (21:15/289th) also competed on the varsity squad.

The Garaway boys team placed 11th out of 41 teams at the Tiffin Carnival.
Julian Shrock led finished in 20th place in 16:44, but the Pirates fared well across the board in putting up some sold team numbers. The Pirates field was rounded out by Kristian Stocksdale (17:36 /60th), Noah Wentworth (17:58/78th), Andrew West (17:59 /81st), Daniel Mast (18:34/123rd), Braden Shupe (18:56/151st) and Kyle Dunn (20:12/234th).
In the Open Race competition, Tyler Francis placed 92nd in a time of 21:46, followed by Pirates Dakota Ross (22:32/121st) and Josh Gisinger (29:13 – 211th).

East Canton won the Div. III race, placing four runners in the top 27 placers. Included in that quartet were Josh Conrad (16:06/8th), Demetrius Snellenberger (16:07/9th), Tony Capillo (16:46/22nd) and Kyeem Newell-Owens (16:54/27th).

The Smithville Smithies finished seventh, but the big news for the Smithies was the effort of senior Lucas Clark, who ran with the front pack all day before eventually finishing third by cracking thesub-16:00 mark at 15:50. Teammate Justin McKeal ended up seventh, finishing in a time of 16:05.

The Lady Pirates of Garaway faced some strong competition at the in the Division Iii race, where they placed 11th out of 54 teams.
Jocelyn Miller continued her strong campaign, churning her way to 40th-place in a time of 20:36. Coming in behind her for the Lady Pirates were Rylee Wilhelm (21:35/79th), Lindsey Goehring (21:44/92nd), Lauren Goehring (22:04/107th), Claudia Miller (22:08/112th), Bethany Rider (22:20/125th) and Mallory Millet (22:52/160th).
