Day two of the 2018 Classic in the Country Challenge at Hiland High School’s Perry Reese, Jr. Community Center is a wrap. Kudos to Tenishia Benson, Bryce McKey and the rest of the CitC organizing committee for being able to rework the schedule to tackle the weather-related issues that wreaked havoc on the travel for a few participating teams.

With the snow and ice impacting the matchups on Friday and Saturday, it created an opportunity for there to be seven games played on Sunday for the first time in the 15-year history of this event. Despite the late scheduling changes, the first three games of day two continued where day one left off with all three being decided by three points or less and two of the games going into overtime. Winners on the day were Elyria Catholic, Newark, Fairmont, Lakota West, Mason, Mount Notre Dame and Wadsworth.

Game 1

Player of the Game: Ally Winnen of Elyria Catholic

Elyria Catholic built a 34-24 lead after three quarters of play to open up the competition on day two of Classic in the Country, but Minster’s defense dug in, and the offense got hot at the right time in the fourth quarter with a chance to tie up the game on their last possession. However, the open three attempt for the Wildcats didn’t drop, and the Panthers escaped with the victory. Ally Winnen’s double-double paved the way for Elyria Catholic with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Faith Williams chipped in 11 points and four rebounds for the Panthers. Taylor Kogge and Demaris Wolf paced Minster with 10 points each.

Player of the Game: Gabby Stare of Newark

Being the first overtime game this year at Classic in the Country, Newark and Wayne didn’t disappoint. Both teams were streaky enough on offense to keep things interesting. Olivia Trice had a shot to win it at the end of overtime, but it was off the mark to give the Wildcats the win. Gabby Stare hit some free throws late and led Newark with 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Katie Shumate, headed to Kent State next fall, added 11 points, six rebounds and three big blocked shots. Wayne was led by Olivia Trice with 11 points and four rebounds. Destiny Bohanon, a University of Dayton recruit, was held in check with five points, but she stepped up defensively with four steals.

Game 3

Kettering Fairmont 60 (double overtime)

Player of the Game: Madison Bartley of Fairmont

This was the sixth of the last seven Classic in the Country games in 2018 to be decided by three points or less. South held the early lead after the first quarter, but Fairmont became alive in the second quarter by outscoring South 14-6 to make it a 22-18 game at halftime. South hustled their way back into it during the second half, but Fairmont hit enough of their foul shots at the end of regulation and in both overtime periods to seal the victory.

South had a chance to tie it with one last shot but decided to try a quick two-point FG, and it fell short. Bartley, only a sophomore, finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and served up five assists from her post position for Fairmont, and Mali Morgan-Elliott hit some clutch FTs down the stretch of regulation and overtime to protect the lead for the Firebirds. Westerville South had three players in double digits, led by Anyssa Jones with 17 points and followed by Sommer Pitzer with 15 and Peyton Guice with 13.

Player of the Game: Abby Prohaska of Lakota West

The previous seven games of the 2018 Classic in the Country Challenge were decided by a total of 22 points. This one ended an amazing streak of competitive games, but the early projected outcome was turned on its ear. Whatever coach Andy Fishman said to his Firebirds at halftime flipped the fortune of the Golden Eagles. GlenOak had held Lakota West to one basket in the second quarter with 5:10 left in the half, and the Firebirds went scoreless from that point until the intermission buzzer sounded with GlenOak holding a 19-14 advantage.

Lakota West quickly went on a 19-0 run in the third quarter to claim a 33-19 lead and never looked back. The Firebirds pushed their offensive explosion to a 31-3 run and spread the offensive wealth across their roster. The Firebirds were led by Notre Dame recruit Abby Prohaska, who finished with 10 points, eight steals, four rebounds and four assists. Nevaeh Dean, Sarah Jones and Ally Haar had eight points a piece for Lakota West. GlenOak was led by Aniyah Hall, who finished with six points, five rebounds and six blocked shots.

Player of the Game: Anna Brinkman of Mason

In the battle between two Comets, a game that featured two future Florida State University teammates in Solon’s Valencia Myers and Mason’s Sammie Puisis, this matchup had some superstar billing. While both players stuffed the stat sheet, it was Puisis and Mason that earned the victory. Mason’s defense kept Solon in check through the first three quarters of play, allowing Solon to score only 17 total points. Myers scored Solon’s first 10 points of the game until midway through the third quarter when Katherine Dittoe knocked down a 3-pointer.

At one point Mason was up as much as 38-17 until Solon’s offense woke up and poured in 23 points in the fourth quarter to narrow the gap. Anna Brinkmann led Mason with a double-double, scoring 10 points, snagging 10 rebounds and dishing out three assists while teammate Puisis finished with 13 points and eight rebounds. Myers finished the game leading all scorers with 23 points and 10 rebounds for Solon.

Player of the Game: Makira Cook of Mount Notre Dame

With Gabbie Marshall (an Iowa recruit) not able to play due to an ankle injury, Mount Notre Dame needed someone to step up on offense for the Cougars. Enter Makira Cook. Cook sliced and diced her way through the Reynoldsburg defense, pouring in 20 points and dishing out a team-high four assists while also thieving five steals on the defensive end of the court.

The Cougars shot 56 percent from behind the arc in the first half, pushing them to a 30-15 halftime advantage. Mount Notre Dame put the game away after outscoring the Raiders 18-9 in the third quarter. Reynoldsburg made a 11-3 run in the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late. Laila Phelia contributed 10 points and seven rebounds for Mount Notre Dame with teammate Julia Hoefling adding 11 points, two rebounds and two assists. Uju Ezuedu led Reynoldsburg with 13 points, four rebounds and two assists. Kyria Walker added 12 points, three rebounds and two steals for the Raiders.

Player of the Game: Annie Roshak of North Canton Hoover

North Canton Hoover and Wadsworth made the final game of day two a memorable one. The Grizzlies got a 10-point lead and held the lead through much of the game, only to see the Vikings rally and take a late lead. However, Wadsworth was able to score a pair of huge buckets late, and a game-winning 3-pointer by Emily Walker rimmed out, allowing the Grizz to escape with a 50-47 victory.

Despite being on the losing end, Roshak played all 32 minutes, scored 22 points, hauled in eight rebounds and tacked on four assists for the Vikings. Alexis Green chipped in 10 points and four rebounds for Hoover. Wadsworth was led by Kacie Evans, who posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 caroms, while Taylor Leatherman added nine points and Peyton Banks had eight points.
