Smithies, Pirates enjoy banner day at rugged Boardman Cross Country Invitational

Area cross country teams represented well at the annual Boardman Spartan Invitational Saturday, Sept., 17 in Boardman, Ohio.

As has been the case all season, the Smithville boys excelled to the point of challenging for a team title. Smithville ended up in thirds place behind state powers Maplewood and St. Thomas Aquinas. The Smithies were led by Joey Coudriet, who ran a 16:10.8, a time which trialed only the winning effort of Tyler Polman of Independence, who won in a time of 16:08.0. Lucas Clark earned a top 15 place, finishing 12th in 17:04. Garaway earned seventh place overall in the gigantic field, led by Nathan Wicker, who placed 31st in 18:06.

There were plenty of challengers at the front of the pack in the Girls Div. III race. Tusky Valley sophomore Madisan DeBos placed third in a time of 19:29.6, while Garaway boasted two runners in the top 15, including Ariel Wentworth, who placed 10th overall in 20:09, and Jocelyn Miller, who earned 15th place in 20:30. DeBos helped the Trojans finish third, while the Lady Pirates ended up fifth.

In the Div. II Boys High School race, senior Cody Booth led a pack of quality runners from Indian Valley to a seventh place finish. He ran a time of 16:53 and finished 12th overall. Claymont’s Eric Debolt finished 32nd in 17:25 to pace the Mustangs to a 166th place finish.

Wooster’s boys also had a grand day at the races, placing 10th in a field of 46 Div. I Open teams that featured some of the best runners in the state. The Generals were led by Christopher Cannon, who placed 48th in 17:22. The Lady Generals also fared well finishing 23rd of 41 teams. They were led by Maddi Nacci’s 33rd place finish in 20:51.
