In the first round of the 2016 Division I Wrestling Championships West Holmes graduate, and North Carolina State wrestler, Max Rohskopf started the day with a win. On March 17, Rohskopf defeated Ohio University’s Austin Reese by a 2-0 decision.
The five seed in the 165-pound bracket, Rohskopf then faced Rider’s Connor Brennan Thursday evening and did not come out on top. Rohskopf got a late escape in the match with one minute to go that tied it up at 2-2. The bout would then head to overtime. With 18 seconds left in the extra period Brennan scored a takedown for the 4-2 win.
On Friday, March 18 Rohskopf will now face John Staudenmayer in the morning in the wrestleback bracket. Rohskopf beat Staudenmayer 1-0 in the 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference tournament final, 1-0.
Penn State leads the team standings in Madison Square Garden after day one. The Nittany Lions sit atop the board with 27.5 points and Oklahoma State and Ohio State both have 24. Oklahoma Sttate has seven grapplers in the quarterfinals, Penn St. sent six and the Buckeyes have five. Ohio State won the national title in 2015.
Rohskopf and the N.C. State Wolfpack sit in 9th place with 13 points.
