RECAP: Knights drop first game of the tournament

The West Holmes Knights didn’t last long on the tournament trail this year.  A season ago the Knights got to the district final after pulling off two post-season wins.

This year West Holmes was one-and-down with an opening loss in the Div. II Belmont sectional from Ohio University Eastern.

The Knights opened with the 14-8, number four seed in the bracket, New Philadelphia Quakers.  New Philly grew a 8-2 lead early in the first quarter and led the rest of the way against the number 19 seed West Holmes.

New Philadelphia grew its lead to as many as 28 points in the third quarter and then cruised to a 71-45 win.

The Quakers move down the tournament trail to take on Morgan, who beat Claymont in the other sectional semifinal on Friday, 66-42.

Braden Young led the Quakers with 14 points and Michael Karl and Zander Ricklick each had 11 for the victors.

Josh Goudy had a team and game-high 17 points for the Knights who now fall to 2-20 on the season.  Chase Wells and Connor Roach had six points each for the Knights and Blaine Hager tossed in five.

The Knights’ season doesn’t end here. They have a make-up game with Clear Fork, on the road, Saturday Feb. 20.  The Knights beat Clear Fork earlier this season.
