Outstanding Athletes event being held at Quaker Stadium

On Sunday, Aug. 12 from 2-6 p.m., Quaker Stadium will be the host location for the Outstanding Athletes track and field community event. Starlight and the Tuscarawas Masonic Lodge #59 in Dover have partnered and organized an afternoon of track and field events, carnival games, food, and fun. Anyone with a disability can participate in the events being held at Quaker Stadium. Friends, family and the community are invited to come and join the athletes participating in the events and activities. Many local businesses have joined to make this event possible.

The idea transpired when Cassie Elvin, Starlight CEO, reached out to Jim Lewis of the local Dover Masons Lodge in hopes of organizing a fun-filled afternoon of track and field events in the community for anyone in the area with a disability. “I received a phone call from Cassie about organizing a community track and field fun day event for people with disabilities,” Lewis said.

The organizing and planning started immediately between Elvin and Lewis. “When local businesses were asked to support the event, there was no hesitation. They jumped aboard quickly,” Lewis said.

When Lewis was asked what his goal was for the event, he said, “A positive and successful event in which people with disabilities can perform track and field events and fun activities and feel like the Outstanding Athletes that they are while the community cheers for them.”

Participating athletes will be receiving a metal, T-shirt and meal. Carnival games will be available to be played. Shuffleboard bowl, ring toss, high striker, adult Jenga and corn hole will add to the day’s excitement and activities, according to Elvin. The Quaker Ladies from New Philadelphia will sell hotdogs, nachos, chips and other food items at the event.

Friends, family and the community are encouraged to watch and cheer on the athletes performing in the events. “It will be an amazing and awesome afternoon for the athletes as they experience the opportunity to perform the events at the revered Quaker Stadium,” said Tracy Aubihl, Starlight’s community connections manager. “Starlight appreciates the out-pouring of support within Tuscarawas County from the businesses for this exciting event.”
