The Malone University cross country teams collected Top-7 finishes at the NCAA Div. II Midwest Regional Championships that were hosted by Cedarville University on Saturday.
The Pioneer women took sixth among 28 teams while the men were seventh (also among 28 teams). Senior Jade Smith (Lake H.S.) automatically qualified for the NCAA Div. II National Championships after placing third overall among nearly 200 competitors. Smith, junior Hannah Thompson (GlenOak H.S.), senior Nate Boyer (East Liverpool H.S.) and junior George McCartney (Toledo Central Catholic H.S.) earned All-Midwest Region accolades by virtue of finishing among the Top 25 in their respective races.
Rachel Wentworth, a former standout at Garaway and current sophomore at Malone, finished 69th overall with a time of 23:27.3.
Although both Malone teams missed out on automatic qualification to the National Championships, the Pioneer men’s and women’s squads are eligible to receive one of eight at-large bids. The NCAA will announce the at-large qualifiers later this evening, and if selected, Malone’s cross country teams will continue their seasons by competing at Nationals on Nov. 18 in Evansville, Indiana.
