And Holmes Countians thought it rained hard earlier in the week. The heavy rain that came down on Holmes County a couple of days earlier paled in comparison to the torrential downpour of runs the West Holmes Lady Knights put on visiting Lexington on Thursday, April 5.
West Holmes stormed out of the gate locked and loaded, posting 11 runs on the Lady Lex after Morgan Balder cruised through the first inning for West Holmes on the mound. Innings of five, five and two rounded out the short four-and-a-half-inning affair as the Lady Knights pounded the rock up and down the lineup.
“We hit the cover off the ball tonight,” WHHS head coach Jaime Chenevey said.
The softballs that took a beating would not disagree with that assessment. Hitting stars littered the scorebook for West Homes. Maddie Woods went 4-for-4, hitting for the cycle, which is a single, double, triple and home run. She added four RBI and a steal while Lexi Martin matched her effort at the plate, going 4-of-4 with three RBI. Jazz Knapp rounded out the trio of Lady Knights to collect four hits, going 4-of-5 with two RBI. Natalie Martin went 2-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI, Morgan Allen lashed a pair of hits in three official at-bats with a triple and three runs driven in, Jessie Keen was 3-for-4, Jessica Yabroff made her first varsity home run very memorable by making it a grand slam, and Callie Cline, Liberty Arnold and Olivia Spurgeon each tacked on hits for the Lady Knights.
Getting overshadowed in the hit parade was Balder’s effort on the mound. The senior twirled a nifty two-hitter.
