While the West Holmes Lady varsity softball team marching through the state tournament, the Lady Knights’ junior varsity squad was also busy having some fun.
West Holmes captured the championship at the Northwestern JV Softball tournament.
The West Holmes JV softball team opened up their chase for a title by defeating Northwestern in the opening round by a score of 10-2.
Lexi Martin pitched the complete game for the win, striking out 13 batters. Stephanie Large led the team offensively with three hits and two RBIs. The Lady Knights advance to the semifinals where they faced Ashland.
The Lady Knights continued to roll, churning out an impressive 10-1 victory that propelled them into the finals. Martin again pitched the complete game, striking out 14 to gain the win. Maddie Firebaugh led the team offensively, going 3-of-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Jessica Yabroff, Karlie Gallion and Izzy McCullough contributed two RBIs each.
The finals pitted West Holmes against a tough Buckeye group, but the Lady Knights proved up to the challenge in gaining a 3-1 win to capture the championship.
Both teams came to play championship softball as neither team committed an error in the game. Morganne Balder and Olivia Ferguson combined to pitch a two-hitter for West Holmes. The Lady Knights came into the fifth inning facing a 1-0 deficit. Liberty Arnold started things off by driving in Katie Tish to tie the game up at 1-1. Izzy McCullough was then called on to pinch-hit with bases loaded, two outs and the game in the balance. She responded by smashing a double to score Karlie Gallion and Arnold. Ferguson and the defense took over from there to preserve the lead and claim the title.
