One of the toughest parts about senior night is overcoming the emotions that can accompany the game.
For the West Holmes Lady Knights, three solid quarters of play followed an opening quarter that was one to forget as West Holmes fell to visiting River View 49-30 in West Holmes’ final home game of the year.
The loss put an end to the Lady Knights’ modest three-game winning streak in the Saturday, Feb. 10 contest in The Dungeon.
Before the contest began, the West Holmes faithful displayed their admiration for the three graduating Lady Knights, two of whom have been injured all season.
Kaylor Perone, Alexis Hunter and Jess Marmet were escorted to center court by their parents, but both Martin and Marmet have been delegated to the bench this season, thanks to knee injuries, while Perone has become the team’s leading scorer this year.
Once the action began in earnest, the Lady Knights saw the Black Bears jump all over them in the early going. The blitzkrieg allowed River View to gain a huge 18-5 advantage through one quarter, and the Lady Knights never recovered, although they did settle in.
West Holmes was able to keep pace with the Black Bears in the second quarter and trailed 30-16 at the intermission. Led by Perone, the Lady Knights trimmed one point off the deficit in the third period and trailed 40-27 through three frames, but West Holmes could get no closer, and eventually the Black Bears wore them down and pulled away for the win.
Perone scored 14 points to pace West Holmes, but there was little else to help in the scoring column as the Lady Knights committed 19 turnovers and hit just 11-of-34 action shots on the night. Regan Wilcox added four points, three boards and a pair of steals while Paige Race and Alicia Alexander both added three points. Kaylin Martin, Maddie Woods and Charolette Brown all chipped in with two points. Woods added three assists for the Lady Knights, who fell to 5-16 on the season.
For the Black Bears, Cydney Whiteus scored six of her team-high 14 points in the first quarter, helping River View build a lead too monumental for West Holmes to overcome. Kelsey Hartsock produced 10 points, Jessica Hartsock scored seven, and Mallory Giffin, Sydnee Bice and Emmie Brenly all added six points for the winners.
