Welcome to the world of winning head coach Jesse Wengerd.
The Hiland Lady Hawks got the new head coach his first official victory of his varsity soccer career on August 22, scoring three times to spot the Lady Hawks to a 3-2 win over Canton McKinley in Canton.
In the win, Sarah Haun got the scoring started, nailing the back of the net nine minutes into the game. Katie Raber then took a pass from Selena Herrera and drilled home a score to make it 2-0.
But the biggest goal may have been freshman Julee Zinck’s score with 10 seconds remaining in the first half, which spotted Hiland a 3-0 lead heading into the half.
That score became huge because McKinley found the back of the net twice in the second half, but Hiland was able to fend off several late attempts to clinch the victory and hand Wengerd his first win.
“That felt great to get coach his first win,” said junior midfielder Jalayna Hershberger. “We got 25 shots off, which is a great number for us, because in our scrimmages we knew that was something we needed to improve.”
Hershberger said that a key to the win was that three different players were able to score, and moving the scoring around is a must if they want to be successful.
As for getting their coach the big win, Hershberger added, “He was pretty excited about it. We could have finished a little stronger, but it was a win and we will definitely take it.”
Apparently winning felt just about right to the Lady Hawks, who continued to roll, churning out a 1-0 victory over Triway on August 28.
In that contest, Kate Raber knocked home the lone Hiland goal at the 21 minute mark of the first half, but it was enough as Hiland goalie McKenzie Miller and the Hiland defense made it stand up.
Hiland improved to 2-1 on the campaign.
