Hiland girls head soccer coach Connor Lee may be new to girls soccer and the head coaching ranks, but he has certainly developed a flair for the positive that has made him look like a seasoned veteran.
Hiland stands at 2-0 on the season after downing Triway 5-0 in a game dominated by the Lady Hawks from start to finish. That win on Saturday, Aug. 25 at Triway comes on the heels of a thrilling 1-0 victory over the Loudonville Redbirds that was evenly matched throughout the 80 minutes of play.
In the win over Loudonville the only time either team could find a great result was off the foot of Lexi Raber, who took a pass from Greta Mast and drove it home for the game’s lone goal.
“We played well against a very good Loudonville team,” Lee said. “I am really glad for the shut-out against a tough defense.”
Hiland took 10 shots to the Redbirds’ six while the Lady Hawks garnered six corner to Loudonville’s four. Kendra Shetler recorded two saves while Abbey Beach collected six.
While it took the Lady Hawks longer to find the back of the net against Triway, once they did they enjoyed the taste of it so much they went on to produce four more goals in the shut-out win.
The Titans’ defense would match Hiland’s in tossing up a shut-out for the game’s first 31 minutes, but in the 32nd minute Grace Mast’s pass found the foot of Raber, who smacked home the lead goal.
It would remain at 1-0 through the rest of the half, but in the 54th minute Gabby Schlabach would take a Falyn Miller assist and knock home a goal to put Hiland up 2-0.
Three minutes later Mia Gertz would make some room for herself, beat a couple of defenders and score an unassisted goal, and 10 minutes later Kate Bodiker would find Gertz again for a 4-0 lead. In the 80th minute Bodiker would garner her first career goal off of a pass from Paige Gertz, and the offense’s damage was complete.
Defensively Hiland was stout, not allowing Triway to get off a single shot on goal while Hiland took 10. Triway keeper Amber Bickel had five saves. Triway fell to 0-3 with the loss.
“We’re happy to get the win,” Lee said. “We did good work on defense to get another shut-out, and I was glad to see the score sheet spread out between a lot of different girls.”
