A summer of dominance continued for Kaufman Realty when it took on Tuscarawas County Class A baseball rival Wood Electric on Sunday, July 9 at Lehman Field.
Kaufman got a pair of sensational pitching performances from Garrett Harstine and Jordan Yoder and cruised to wins of 9-2 in the opener and 6-0 in the nightcap.
Kaufman got on the board in the opener in the second when Hayden Mobley walked and came around to score on Bryan Yoder’s single, but Kaufman wasted a golden opportunity by leaving the bases loaded.
Mobley made sure nothing got wasted in the third. After Richie Mast was hit by a pitch, Mobley took one deep over the wall in left to make it 3-0. Harstine would need no more and actually cruised through the first six innings unscathed.
Kaufman Realty would leave no doubt by scoring three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth Scott Troyer singled, Brandt Miller was hit by a pitch, and Mast and Mobley both doubled to make it 6-0. In the sixth Kobe Miller drew a walk to lead things off, and Brandt Miller swatted a long drive over the fence in left-center to make it 8-0. Mast then walked, took second on a wild pitch and strolled home when Mobley whacked a ball to the wall in right-center for a double.
An error opened the door for Wood Electric in the seventh, and Wood then ripped four straight singles, but on the fourth one Troyer gunned down a runner at the plate for the first out, and Harstine then induced a double play roller back to the mound to end the game.
Mobley had a huge game, going 3-for-3 with two runs and a trio of RBIs. Todd Ropp singled twice and drove in a run, Brandt Miller drove in a pair with the home run and Mast produced two runs with a double. Harstine improved to 5-1 on the year by scattering nine hits, allowing the two runs with one of them earned. He struck out three and didn’t walk a batter.
In the nightcap it was all about the pitching of Jordan Yoder, who took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. The only two Wood Electric base runners to reach base versus the southpaw Yoder did so via errors, one in the first and one in the sixth. Eventually a two-out bunt single ended the no-hit bid, and Yoder gave up a sharp single in the seventh but was otherwise perfect in striking out eight while walking just one.
Offensively KR jumped out to an early lead with single tallies in the first and second innings and never looked back.
Troyer tripled to lead the game off and scored, and in the second Beau Workman and Bryan Yoder singled, an error allowing Workman to scamper home.
Jordan Yoder didn’t need any more help, but he got some in the fourth. Ropp doubled and trotted home when Workman drove a pitch over the fence in left for a 4-0 lead. Kaufman Realty tacked on two more insurance runs in the next inning. Troyer singled, Mobley drew a walk and both came around to score on Ropp’s huge double to right.
Workman, Troyer and Ropp all smacked two hits in the game with Ropp and Workman each driving home a pair. Workman and Troyer both scored twice.
The pair of victories improved Kaufman Realty to 18-1 on the campaign as KR marches closer to another regular season title.
