By Bret Curren

The West Holmes Middle School wrestling team kept their dual meet record unblemished at 6-0 after posting a 71-6 shellacking on Union Local and a 57-30 victory over Indian Valley in dual meet action Tuesday, January 3 at Union Local High School in Belmont, Ohio.

Only six head to head match-ups were held between the Knights and host Jets as Union Local gave a bevy of forfeits to the Knights. West Holmes did go 5-1 in those match-ups receiving wins from Jack Welsh (8th Grade, 80 lbs., Tech Fall), Dylan Strouse (8th Grade, 86 lbs., Fall), Sean Over (8th Grade, 104 lbs., Fall), Corbin Miller (8th Grade, 110 lbs., Medical Default), and Gavin Greer (8th Grade, 134 lbs., Fall). And, Noah Tish (7th Grade, 80 lbs.) scored a fall win in an exhibition match.

The dual with Indian Valley was a bit tougher for the Knights.

Matthew Young (7th Grade, 122 lbs.) started the dual off with a fall win for the Knights followed by a forfeit win for the Braves and a fall win from Greer and a decision win from Dillon Miller (7th Grade, 142 lbs.) giving West Holmes an early 15-6 lead.

The Knights forfeited at 150 lbs. then saw Brayden Myers (8th Grade, 160 lbs.) and Stephen Baldridge (8th Grade, 172 lbs.) score a pair of fall wins followed by a Colt Cox (8th Grade, 205 lbs.) forfeit victory to up their edge to 33-12. After a forfeit win at 245 lbs. for Indian Valley and seven bouts remaining the dual was still up for grabs.

West Holmes erased any doubts as the light weights came through scoring five straight wins – Welsh (Fall), Strouse (Fall), Tucker Kaufman (7th Grade, 92 lbs., Decision), Connor Varnes (7th Grade, 98 lbs., Decision), and Over (Fall) – to sew up the meet for West Holmes. The Braves would win the final two bouts by fall to close the scoring at 57 – 30.

Nine exhibition matches were held between the Knights and Braves with Zach Snow (7th Grade, 92 lbs.), T. W. Anderson (8th Grade, 98 lbs.), Gage Marmet (7th Grade, 104 lbs.), Young, Myers, and Cox winning their bouts.

The Knights middle school squad will host Apple Creek Waynedale, Warsaw River View and Orrville in dual meets Friday, January 6 at West Holmes Middle School beginning at 5:30 p.m.
