Knights prep for state duals and add Lake County duals Feb. 3

By Bret Curren

West Holmes High School wrestling head coach Scott Vaughn has announced a new date has been set for the Knights’ wrestling schedule.

The Knights will head to Madison High School in Madison in Lake County on Saturday, Feb. 3 for a five-team round-robin duals meet.

“We added this date earlier this week to try and make up for lost mat time when the Bill Dies tournament was canceled last weekend,” Vaughn said. “The added date looks like a pretty good situation. We’ll get four dual meets, which means mat time for the team.”

The Knights will face the host Blue Streaks, Avon, Creston Norwayne and Uniontown Green beginning at 9 a.m.

Madison High School is located at 3100 Burns Road, Madison.

In addition West Holmes will face Clear Fork in the upcoming Sub-Region 10A State Team Duals.

The West Holmes High School varsity wrestling team earned the number-one seed for the Wednesday, Jan. 24 opening round of the 2018 Ohio High School Athletic Association Div. II State Team Duals Tournament when pairings were announced Jan. 19. The Knights will face former Ohio Cardinal Conference foe Bellville Clear Fork, the number-eight seed in Sub-Region 10A, at Ontario High School at 5 p.m.

A victory for the Knights over the Colts would move them to the Region 10 quarterfinals, where they would face the winner of the number-four seed Shelby and number-five seed Mansfield Senior matchup. The quarterfinal duals will begin 20 minutes after the completion of the opening round duals.

With a quarterfinal win the Knights would advance to the Region 10 semifinal round, which will take place Jan. 31 at a site to be determined.

The Knights would square off there with the winner of the upper half of Sub-Region 10A. Those matchups, which also will be contested at Ontario, include number-two seed Caledonia River Valley versus number-seven seed Galion and number-three seed Ontario versus number-six seed Lexington.

Sub-Region 10B matchups at Medina Buckeye High School include number-one seed Lodi Cloverleaf versus number-four seed Fairview Park and number-two seed Bay Village against number-three seed Medina Buckeye.

At Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School, number-one seed Akron St. Vincent St Mary battles number-four seed Richfield Revere, and number-two seed Peninsula Woodridge tussles with number-three seed Parma Padua Franciscan.
