Knights netters split rare match play double-header with Tygers, Colts

West Holmes played a double header Wednesday, April 29 at home, splitting a pair of matches with Ohio Cardinal Conference foes Mansfield Senior and Clear Fork.

West Holmes welcomed Senior in the earlier match-up, and dealt the Tygers a 4-1 loss.

At first singles, Knight Ethan Meyer easily cruised past Zach Blank 6-1, 6-2, while West Holmes number two man Andrew Rodhe had a bit more difficult time at second singles. Rodhe was able to eventually sneak by Senior’s Ian Brown 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. At third singles, Eric Biltz of West Holmes turned back Tyger Coleman Proffitt 6-3, 7-5.

In doubles play, West Holmes’ number one team of Cameron Mathie and Nathan Hartley had a battle on their hands, but eventually churned out a win over Ethan Luedy and David Harring by a 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (9-7) count. Senior got its lone win on the night when Jacob Miller and Mitch Wade handed Jason Abraham and John Hipp a 6-3, 6-2 defeat.

Clear Fork then rolled into Millersburg and proved to be a lot friskier than the Tygers were, doling out a 4-1 loss on the Knights. The Colts were actually playing in a make-up match versus the Knights, having just come from Hiland earlier in the evening.

At first singles, Meyer earned the lone win for the Knights, dropping a 6-0, 6-1 decision on Eli Novak. Clear Fork’s David McKinley and Andrew Rodhe went at it in a lengthy three-set tiebreaker that eventually went McKinley’s way, 6-3, 3-6, 6-7 (6-8).

For Rodhe, it was the fourth straight marathon match of the week.

“Andrew Rodhe gets the ironman of the night, playing six straight sets in over 4 1/2 hours of straight playing, and had two-three setters the last two nights,” said West Holmes coach Jason Otto.

Clear Fork’s Alec Feozel defeated Eric Biltz 6-1, 6-3 at third singles, while Colts’ firstdoubles team of Jake Smith and Vinnie Kendjorksky shot down Mathie and Hartley 6-1, 6-2. In second doubles play, Clear Fork’s Cody Caudell and Brandon Cole moved past Abraham and Hipp 6-1, 6-2.

With the split, West Holmes is now 6-9 overall in match play and 2-4 in the OCC.
