Champions set their goals, work toward their goals and then go out and take their goals.
Michelle Hostettler is a champion, and she checked off all three of those items in cruising to a Div. II regional cross country crown.
During the Div. II district cross country meet at Cambridge Saturday, Oct. 22, West Holmes’ Michelle Hostettler and Maddie Dunlap of Carrollton had no competition.
At the regional meet at Pickerington High School Saturday, Oct. 29, the two seniors had company, but in the end, it played out much the same as it had in districts.
Hostettler continued to dominate the late-season, eventually pulling away in 18:42 to win the race easily, while Dunlap ran a runner-up time of 19:00, having to fend off Sydnee Mangette of Liberty Union (19:05), Emma Hoellrich of Fairfield Union (19:13) and Kylee McFarland of Granville (19:15).
While it was at least competitive, one got the sense that Hostettler, who placed third at state last year, was simply biding her time as she effortlessly cruised along.
He one biggest goal coming into the meet was to grab her second straight regional crown, which she did with ease.
That set the table for a return date at state, where she enters as one of the race favorites to challenge for the title.
