The Hiland boys varsity soccer team continues to roll, with victories over Northwestern and Smithville this week as it readies for upcoming tournament action.
Thursday, October 13 the Hawks traveled to Northwestern where they held off a pesky and physical Huskies squad 1-0. Hiland dominated the ball and time of possession, but were unable to convert on many chances.
But Derek Miller found one in traffic in the box and drove a scorcher under the diving goalie with about ten minutes remaining to give the Hawks the one goal victory.
Saturday, October 15 Hiland made the journey to Smithville for the Smithies’ senior day on a beautiful sunny afternoon. Smithville rested many starters with the tourney on the horizon, and the game saw many minutes for all with the Hawks dominating the game to the tune of a 10-1 rout.
Sinjon Howell hinted at was was to come when he maneuvered through a few Smithville defenders and drove one in on the left side to get Hiland on the board only a minute into the game. The Hawks divided their ten goals between nine players, with Declan Howell netting two on the day.
With the pair of wins, Hiland moves to 11-2-2 on the season, and will host Sandy Valley on Tuesday in their tournament opener.
