A pair of local girls golf teams found their way to the Div. II district golf tournament with solid performances at the sectional tournament held at River Greens Golf Course Wednesday, Sept. 28.
Paced by Olivia Shaw’s 85, the Indian Valley Braves placed third in the field, while Jocelyn Troyer fired off a 78 to guide Garaway into the fourth and final district qualifying spot.
The Braves totaled up a team score of 373, led by Shaw’s 85 which was sixth best score overall. Teammates Makayla Keathley (87), Elle McDaniel (970 and Kiera Brown (104) rounded out the Braves’ scoring. That score was one stroke better than the Lady Pirates.
Garaway snuck in by taking the final spot qualifying with a team score of 374, with Troyer’s 78 earning her the third-best score on the day.
Rounding out Garaway’s scoring were Leigh Ann Williams (86), Kalyn Mast (93) and Helena Immel (117).
The two teams qualified, but they will be joined by another local individual who qualified for districts in Strasburg’s Brynn Eckhardt, who qualified for district play with a solid score of 85.
The top four teams as well as the top four individuals not on a qualifying team advanced to the district level.
Beaver Local was fairly dominant on the day, winning the tournament with a score of 356, while John Glenn narrowly edged out the Braves and Lady Pirates for second by fashioning a team score of 372.
Other area teams that will not be moving on to districts that participated in sectional play included River View (378) which placed fifth after being paced by Marie Stufflebean’s 86, while Strasburg (387) took sixth.
Claymont finished ninth with a 411, Sandy Valley’s 432 placed it 10th, and Ridgewood’s score of 460 put it in 11th and Tuscarawas Central Catholic rounded out team scoring with a 503.
