Former Pirate Rachel Wentworth enjoying nice start to Malone XC season

Former Garaway Pirate Rachel Wentworth is enjoying a nice start to her sophomore season with the Malone University Pioneers. Malone’s cross country teams both earned top-three finishes at Kutztown University’s Div. II/Div. III Challenge on Sept. 16.

The Pioneer women, ranked 21st in the most recent NCAA Div. II National Poll, took second among 18 teams while the Malone men earned a third-place finish among 19 schools.

Senior Jade Smith (Lake H.S.) led the way, placing first overall in the 6K women’s race with a time of 22:35.7. Hannah Thompson (GlenOak H.S.) was right behind, placing eighth in 23:28.6. Hannah Campbell (River Valley H.S.) took 11th in 23:45.3 while Laura Tweedie (Lake H.S.) was 20th in 24:11.2. Rachel Wentworth (Garaway H.S.) gave Malone five competitors in the top 25 as she placed 24th in 24:24.1. Rachel Koons (Tuslaw H.S.) followed in 31st at 24:34.0 while Allie Dalton (Martinsville, IN) was 39th in 24:54.2.

NCAA Div. II No. 20 Stonehill narrowly edged the Pioneers for the women’s team title (51-64) while West Chester was third (129) and Div. II No. 23 Shippensburg was fourth.

On the men’s side, Malone had four individuals finish in the top 12 of the 8K race. George McCartney (Toledo Central Catholic H.S.) was third in 26:34.0, Nate Boyer (East Liverpool H.S.) took fourth in 26:35.0, Brett Cortelletti (Ontario H.S.) was tenth in 27:08.0 and Noah Chaplik (Louisville H.S.) was 12th in 27:09.0. Noah Whittington (Alliance H.S.) placed 24th in 27:36.0, Zach Fresenko (Louisville H.S.) placed 29th in 27:42.0 and Lorne Strausbaugh (Elmwood H.S.) was 33rd in 27:50.0.

Stonehill, listed among those “receiving votes” in the most recent Div. II National Poll, took the men’s team title with 29 points. No. 18 Shippensburg was second with 48 points while Malone was a close third with 53 points.

The Pioneers will next compete on Sept. 29 at the All-Ohio Intercollegiate Championships, hosted by Cedarville University.
