Trailing by double figures isn’t where the Hiland Lady Hawks usually find themselves. However, trailing by 10 points late in the third period to a talented Ottoville team in the state semifinal, the Lady Hawks mustered all of their courage, relied on their big three of Kennedy Schlabach, Angela Troyer and Morgan McMillen, and used a spirited defensive effort over the game’s final 10 minutes to draw ahead, only to watch Ottoville come back to tie it with 7.8 seconds to play.
However, Hiland ran a play that saw McMillen race down the floor, fire a pass to the corner to Schlabach, who fired off a shot reminiscent of Seger Bonifant’s regional heroics in 2012. Just like Bonifant’s game-winner, Schlabach’s trey from the left corner found nothing but net and set off a wild celebration. Here is a first look at some fantastic photos from the game that Hiland fans will be talking about for years to come.
