It didn’t take long for the West Holmes Lady Knights soccer team to get the lead Saturday, October 11th against the Hiland Hawks in girls soccer action. Knights’ striker Abby Callahan took on senior day with a vengeance scoring three goals for the hat trick leading her team to a 6-0 win.
It wasn’t Callahan though who got the Lady Knights’ first goal, it was a freshman on senior day Ali Guilt. Guilt buried the first goal for the Lady Knights just 1:04 into the match. She trapped a bouncing ball at the top of the penalty area and banged it home pass Hiland Keeper Lexi Miller.
Then it was Callahan’s turn scoring the next three goals of the game and of the first half. The first was a goal that she hit off a Hiland defender that ricocheted into the goal at the 31:14 mark, next she got a cross from fellow forward Mallory Wahl she put away with 21:47 to play in the first half, and then she did the unlikely. With 5:22 to play in the first half Callahan hit a bending corner that scooted past the Hiland keeper Miller and found the nylon. West Holmes now led Hiland 4-0 at the half riding the Callahan hat trick.
“I would have loved to come out with a draw or a win,” said Hiland coach Jesse Wengerd about Hiland’s play in the second half.
“We had some changes in the second half. We didn’t create those in the first half. We held them scoreless for thirty minutes, just had a tough first half, we weren’t ready,” Jesse Wengerd continued.
The other girls soccer coach named Wengerd in the county, Knights head man Josh Wengerd said at halftime, “I told the girls, let’s work on persevering the shutout and getting some second half goals. We have eight wins now and five of them have been shutouts,” he said.
The Lady Knights did get two more goals in the second half, both coming in the final six minutes of the game. The first came off the boot of senior Kennedy Smith with 5:51 to play on an assist from Wahl. Wahl played several well played passes to forwards feet throughout the match giving her teammates good looks at the goal.
Wahl capped off the scoring for West Holmes with 2:35 to play blasting an upper net shot to the near post that just beat Miller.
“Last week we lost to Wooster 1-0 and Clear Fork 6-1 , so it’s nice to get that taste of a victory in your mouth again before you head to the tournament,”said West Holmes’ Wengerd.
West Holmes finishes the regular season 8-3-5. Hiland finishes the season with a 6-7-3 mark and also has several seniors on the team.
The Lady Knights out shot Hiland 21-3 and had the advantage in corner kicks 4-1. In goal for Hiland Miller had a game-high eleven says, while Lady Knights keep Jen Scott wasn’t too busy not recording a save.
