Waynedale’s prolific wrestling program keeps whistling along at a fine pace, and Saturday, Dec. 16 the Golden Bears invited five opponents into their home and then proceeded to thump them around.
The Golden Bears faced five different foes in the marathon day of wrestling and came away with their perfect season still intact. Waynedale railroaded all five opponents, never really getting challenged from a team perspective in any of the five matches, although each match was peppered with some fascinating individual match-ups that got the hometown crowd revved up.
When the mats were finally rolled up and the final match was over, the Golden Bears had defeated River View 52-21 in one of its closest matches of the day, knocked off Fairless 72-12, took down Bedford 48-21, destroyed Wayne County Athletic League foe Dalton 69-6, and dismantled Cloverleaf 72-6 to up its overall record to 9-0 on the season.
The five victories also gave head coach Louie Stanley 402 career wins, placing him seventh in career victories among OHSAA head wrestling coaches.
The Golden Bears got plenty of excellent efforts top to bottom from their lineup with eight of the 14 Waynedale wrestlers boasting spotless 5-0 marks on the day. Included in that list were Gabe Mathias (113 pounds), Storm Stanley (120), Jaden Varner (126), Evan Hostetler (138), Jarrett Varner (145), Max Lemon (160), Nathan Shaw (170) and Logan Stanley (182).
