So with no further ado, and with a plethora of fanfare, we present to you, the 2013 Golden Ticket Awards.
DM = Dave Mast / PM = Paul Money
2013 Fall Team of the Year
• DM/PM: Hiland Hawks Boys Soccer
For a team which lost a ton of talent last year, Scott Bodiker’s hawks didn’t seem to be too fazed. After going 3-3 to begin the year, the team rattled off a school-record 14 games without a loss, and in the process defeated Western Reserve to claim the school’s first-ever Tri-County Soccer League championship. They also captured the school’s record straight ninth consecutive District title, a current state record.
2013 Fall Female Player of the Year
• PM: Mallory Wahl, West Holmes girls soccer forward
All roads to the net ran through Wahl, who was able to find countless open feet when she wasn’t scoring goals.
• DM: Cara Park, West Holmes volleyball
It’s tough to hit something worthwhile at the net when the ball isn’t where it needs to be, and Park got it exactly where it needed to be with eerie consistency all year long.
2013 Fall Male Player of the year
DM: Sam Boyd, West Holmes senior cross country runner
Boyd was nothing short of spectacular at the State cross country meet, surprising even himself with a podium finish that puts the wraps on a stellar career.
PM: Braxton Mullet, Hiland soccer
Mullet proved to be an extremely steady defender on Hiland’s regional runner-up soccer team. Mullet earned three letters, and topped off a special career with his best year ever.
2013 HCT Game Changer of the Year
DM/PM: West Holmes running back Layne Perone
See accompanying story
2013 Fall Lifetime Achievement Award
PM/DM: Emily Molnar, West Holmes cross country
Everything Molnar touches turns to gold. Her checklist of achievements over her three-plus year career in basketball, cross country and track are legendary. She added an All-Ohio moniker to her name by finishing 20th in the State meet.
2013 Fall Coach of the Year
DM: Kevin Beachy – West Holmes cross country
Beachy has worked relentlessly to build a program, and his boys returned to State for the second straight season. This is one program that doesn’t appear in any danger of slowing down.
PM: Ryan Taggart, Garaway golf
How do you follow up six straight State appearances? Go get a seventh, which is what the Pirates did. Taggart’s group made it look easy, but the behind the scenes dedication is incredible.
2013 Charlie Hustle Award
DM: Hiland volleyball team
This team may have been small in stature but it was definitely huge in heart. There reward was a Sectional championship, one which was well deserved.
PM: Chase Campbell, West Holmes boys soccer
Campbell’s Knights struggled, not winning a game, but it never stopped the junior forward from working his tail off every night, whether at practice or in games.
2013 In Your Face Award I
PM: Layne Perone – West Holmes running back
Watching Perone pop some dude at the one yard line as the defender tried, for some crazy reason, to stop a runaway train. When you get your entire team to gasp on the sideline because of the punishing hit you delivered, you know you’re doing something right.
2013 In Your Face Award II
DM: Sierra Miller – Hiland volleyball
Miller’s “Take-That” serve in the Lady Hawks win over Malvern in Sectionals was awesome, as she served an ace at a key moment late in the game, then turned and pointed right in the faces of the jeering Hiland student body.
2013 Play of the Year
PM: Any time Brady Arnold touched the ball
Sometimes athletes are simply electrifying. Arnold falls in that category. His ability to return kicks and take them to the house made everyone sit on the edge of their seats in anticipation, while making defenses quake in their shoes.
DM: Garaway wide receiver Conner Troyer vs. Ridgewood
We’re not sure what was better: The way Troyer ignited Garaway to a second half come-from-behind win over the generals with his exhilarating and improbable gallop down the sideline to end the half, or the fact that he pulled off a David Copperfield in somehow staying inbounds.
2013 Good Sportsmanship Award
DM: Andrew Schlabach, West Holmes golf
Schlabach was a consummate professional on the course and off. One could never tell if he was one-under or six-over par.
PM: Alexis Rolince, West Holmes soccer
Rolince’s ever present smile belied her fierce competitive nature on defense. Toughest Antique Festival Queen ever?
2013 Tough Break Award
DM: Beth Boyles, Hiland girls goalkeeper, broken finger
Boyles played some pretty nice goal for Coach Wengerd’s team, until a late season freak accident in the net saw her break a finger after getting it kicked.
PM: Luke Ogi, West Holmes football, hamstring injury
Ogi’s hamstring injury couldn’t have come at a worse time. The speed-burner who set the record for yards per carry for the Knights came up lame just as West Holmes needed to finish with two wins against Wooster and Clear Fork. They got neither and missed the playoffs.
2013 Game of the Year
PM: West Holmes girls soccer team’s 2-0 win over Lexington on the road
There are big wins, then there are big wins against really good teams. Then there is the whole aspect of playing on the road. The Lady Knights pulled off a rare feat in handling a Lady Lex team which was at the top of the heap in the OCC.
DM: Hiland girls volleyball Sectional title win over Steubenville Central Catholic
Each game was close, and although Hiland was much smaller, they showed heart in putting themselves in position for the upset. They did, getting a Bianca Miller kill to set off a jubilant celebration after several years of brutal losing.
DM: West Holmes tops State-qualifier Triway in volleyball
Couldn’t decide, so it is a tie. The Lady Knights took it right at State qualifier Triway, in the confines of The Pit. This game gave us all a preview as to exactly how good this young team can be in the future.
2013 Newcomer of the Year
DM/PM: Ali Gilt – West Holmes girls soccer
Tall, slender and athletic, Gilt looks like a soccer player. Maybe because she is one. Gilt became an integral part of Josh Wengerd’s game plan, getting better each night out.
2013 HCT All-Freshman team
• Vinny DeFelice – West Holmes cross country – 42nd at State meet
• Michelle Hostettler – West Holmes cross country – 24th at Regional meet
• Blaine Hager – West Holmes golf – Late season surge showed he belonged with the big boys
• Ben Koshmider – Garaway golf – Played sensational golf all season long for State qualifying Pirates
• Alexia Miller – Hiland girls soccer – Stepped in at crucial time late in the year and played great keeper in tournaments
• Katy Vaccariello – West Holmes girls soccer – Defensive whiz made scoring for opponents awfully tough
• Trenton Bridenthal – West Holmes football – Lead the Knights in INTs, showing great athleticism
• Zach Buchanan – West Holmes boys soccer – Came up mid way through the year and played well at the highest level.
