The next 10 days pivotal one for local hoops teams
It may be early in the season, but big games are already upon area high school teams. This is a huge stretch for Holmes County girls and boys basketball.
On Monday, Dec. 8, the Lady Knights of West Holmes will square off with rival Wooster at the Dungeon in what should be a great battle. Then, West Holmes invites another rival, this time the Orrville Red Riders, in for a date Thursday, Dec. 11 at the Dungeon.
Finally, on Saturday, Dec. 13, its a cross county clash between the Lady Knights and Hiland’s Lady Hawks, at the Reese Center in Berlin, in what should be a real knock-down, drag-out battle royale.
For the Lady Hawks, the stretch of big games begins with a Wednesday, Dec. 10 affair with a much improved Malvern Hornets team which is hoping to join the elite teams in the IVC. The showdown with West Holmes on Saturday will be followed by a monster game versus IVC rival Garaway Wednesday, Dec. 17. That one may well put the winner in the driver’s seat for the IVC crown.
On the boys side of the ledger, Tuscarawas Central Catholic has the opportunity to play beat the titans. This week will have a major impact on the landscape of the boys Inter-Valley Conference, as the Saints tackle the league’s top two teams. The Saints host the Hiland Hawks Tuesday, Dec. 9, then welcome the Garaway Pirates Friday, Dec. 12.
The West Holmes boys will also have a pretty major week. The Knights have a pair of road games versus two local rivalries. The first is Tuesday, Dec. 9 when the travel to Triway to take on the Titans in The Pit. Then up is a key OCC battle with rival Orrville, with the Knights looking to begin their defense of the Ohio Cardinal Conference title.
It’s going to be an incredibly important 10 nights of hoops, with the winners earning an early leg up on their respective conferences.
